| Committed to telling stories that are rarely heard, Mirabai Films, Inc. was started in 1989 by acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair. The company's international debut was her universally celebrated feature Salaam Bombay! which won the prestigious Camera d'Or and Prix du Publique at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. It was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film and the first to enjoy worldwide commercial distribution. Since its inception, Mirabai Films, Inc. has produced Mississippi Masala, The Perez Family, Kama Sutra, My Own Country, The Laughing Club of India, Monsoon Wedding, Still, The Children Are Here, Vanity Fair, The Namesake, and Migration. These award-winning films have enjoyed worldwide distribution and have been received as innovative, bold films that effortlessly mix reality with entertainment. Mirabai Films Inc. is committed to creating films that question cultural barriers and depict worlds that are both true to their culture and universal in their appeal. Mirabai Films is currently in pre-production for Ms. Nair's adaptation of Gregory David Roberts novel, Shantaram with Warner Brothers. In addition, the New York City based office serves as an administrative center for Maisha, Mira Nair's East African Film Laboratory, which celebrated its inaugural screenwriting session in August of 2005. We are now in our third year of operation, having trained over 40 filmmakers, are expanding to conduct our programs year round. |
